With New Zealand sitting on two of the most turbulent tectonic plates we have become accustomed and somewhat ambivalent to seismic activity. Since two major earthquakes hitting Christchurch in 2010 and again in 2011 as well as the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake it has sobered up our attitudes towards design and construction of houses and buildings. Seismic strengthening is generally a tricky process involving the retro fitting of steel portals and new additional concrete beams and columns tying into existing structures. This is a delicate process as many clients wish to retain the use of a building during these works. MWH has been contracted to strengthen numerous buildings around Wellington and our last contract was strengthening the Huddart Parker Building in Wellington. We enjoy this genre of work, working closely with both engineers and architects.
Sometimes shops do not have a piece of furniture that suits a space. MWH likes to be able to build a piece that works with the spaces. Everything can be done from concrete bench tops mixed with a glass aggregate, then ground down and polished smooth to reveal a multi colour twinkle, through to custom slabs of wood forming benches and customised out door furniture.
